This thing is huge! : Aktiv Pak AP600 600 Pro Camera Backpack (Silver)
I wanted to use this bag a few times before I reviewed it. Now that I've done a couple weddings and other shoots I can honestly report my experience. I have owned this bag for 2 months.
When I received the bag, I didn't expect it to be THAT huge. I look like a camel that just drank enough water to last me for weeks! I'm 5'2 and I don't know if I could wear this all day, the bag itself is pretty heavy. Empty it easily weighs 10 lbs. I haven't gone hiking with it yet, so I can't say if it's too heavy or not. The weight distribution straps make it seem a lot lighter than say, the one shoulder strap bags. I would get constant strains from those bags! Also, I'm unsure if this would qualify as a 'carry on' item for a standard airline (yes, it is THAT giagnormous!).
However, with other bags that I have had, I've always had to leave something behind because it wouldn't fit (and wouldn't you know, it was the thing that I could've used). With that said, I don't think I'll ever need to buy another bag again.
Another thing that I'm slightly confused/disappointed about: It comes with a second, smaller backpack bag that straps on to the front of the big bag (where are you supposed to wear it if you detach it from the big bag and you're using both? Who knows). Is this for my laptop? There's a outer zippered compartment on the big bag that could fit a laptop too. Either compartment, however, is not adequately padded to protect a laptop. If you plan on using the detachable bag as a laptop bag, I highly suggest getting a padded shell for your laptop to put in to this bag.
The MOST disappointing part of the bag. The first time I put it on, I was adjusting the waist straps. I wasn't tugging hard or putting more than average stress on it (this is probably a good time to tell you that it's a 2 person job to adjust the straps). When I pulled at the extra slack, the plastic ring that holds the strap in place BROKE and flew across my kitchen! Wow, I was shocked. It seems so sturdy...then BLAM! Broken. I ghetto-rigged it by tying it in to a knot. It does the trick, but I was hoping it would be so much more sturdy than that. If the adjustment rings were made out of metal, this would be an A+ bag. But for now, it's a C. I'm kind of holding my breath, waiting for another ring to break. I have no experiences with the thread coming undone or falling apart like the other reviews.
Positive things about the bag: There is a TON of space! If you have a lot of gear you need to haul around, this bag will make it look like you've got nothing. It's huge! I love love love the tripod holster. The pockets on the inside of the bag are great too! Lots of space. The outer pocket of the big bag is great for holding folders (I use mine to lug around photography contracts and disks, mostly flat stuff). If you pack the inside of the bag with gear, that outer pocket kind of buckles. I wouldn't recommend trying to stuff your laptop inside.
I haven't worn it in the rain, so I haven't tested out the rain hood. I did get a little rain drop on it, and the material dye seemed to bleed. I don't know if it's just a fluke, but it's slightly alarming. Say you get caught in a sudden monsoon and you've got important paperwork in there? Will your paperwork get wet and will it get Tye-dyed? It may set you apart for being the hippiest photographer with the grooviest contracts...but it might make you look like a fool and ruin your stuff. I'm not brave enough to dump water on my bag to find out, either!
So, in closing, I think for the price it's worth it if it'll last you a few years until you're able to get the bag of your dreams. If this bag lasts me forever I'd be very pleased. For the money, I'd say it was worth it. If it dies and I have to have a sad funeral for it, it'll give me a good excuse to get a fancy bag with wheels. ;)
